  • Description

PARIS POLICE TODAY (THURSDAY) DETAINED ABOUT 600 YOUTHS AS BOTH COMMUNISTS AND THE GOVERNMENT WORKED TO AVOID MAY DAY DISTURBANCES SHATTERING THE COUNTRY'S CALM. MOST OF THE YOUTHS WERE PICKED UP FOR IDENTITY CHECKS.

THE YOUTHS WERE PICKED UP IN THE SUBURB OF BELLEVILLE WHERE EXTREMIST STUDENTS HAD PLANNED TO HOLD A DEMONSTRATION IN DEFIANCE OF A GOVERNMENT BAN.

PARIS POLICE CHIEF, M. YURICE GRIMAUD, TOLD REPORTERS AT BELLEVILLE THE SITUATION WAS NOT DRAMATIC. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL HOW MANY OF THE 600 YOUTHS DETAINED HAS PLANNED TO TAKE PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION OR HOW MANY WERE ROUNDED UP SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY LOOKED LIKE STUDENTS.

POLICE MOVED IN STRENGTH INTO STRATEGIC POINTS ABOUT PARIS, WHERE THE ONLY DEMONSTRATION OF ANY SIZE WAS STAGED BY ABOUT ONE THOUSAND FLAG-WAVING TROTSKYITES FROM A BREAKAWAY COMMUNIST GROUP.

THE DEMONSTRATORS SET FIRE TO AN AMERICAN FLAG. BUT THEY DISPERSED QUIETLY AND QUICKLY WHEN 15 BUSLOADS OF POLICE ARRIVED.

THERE WERE NO OTHER MAJOR INCIDENTS AND THE FRENCH CAPITAL REMAINED QUIET.

THE TACIT ALLIANCE BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT, THE COMMUNISTS AND OTHER MAJOR LEFT-WING GROUPS TO PREVENT DISTURBANCES, APPEARED TO HAVE WORKED WELL.
