  • Description

IN ELISABETHVILLE, THE KATANGA CAPITAL, A PRESS CONFERENCE WAS CALLED BY MR. O'BRIEN, THE CHIEF UNITED NATIONS REPRESENTATIVE IN THE COUNTRY, ON SEPTEMBER 26, TO REPORT ON THE FIRST MEETING OF THE U.N. TRUCE COMMISSION THAT ARRIVED TO SUPERVISE THE CEASE-FIRE AGREEMENT SIGNED BY PRESIDENT TSHOMBE AT THE NDOLA, NORTHERN RHODESIA, PEACE TALKS. HE SAID THE THREE-HOURS OF TALKS HAD GONE WELL. MR. EVARISTE KIMBA, OF KATANGA, HAD TOLD THE COMMISSION THAT THE U.N. MUST MAKE ITS ATTITUDE TOWARD THE KATANGA DEMAND OF TOTAL WITHDRAWAL OF ALL U.N. TROOPS, KNOWN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

WRECKED BUILDINGS AND VEHICLES STILL DOMINATE THE CAPITAL WHERE A SECOND PRESS CONFERENCE WAS CALLED ON SEPTEMBER 27 - THIS TIME BY PRESIDENT TSHOMBE. HE CALLED ON THE CONGO PREMIER, MR. CYRILLE ADOULA TO MEET HIM WITHOUT DELAY ON NEUTRAL TERRITORY TO DISCUSS THE 15-MONTH-OLD CONGO DISPUTE. HE SUGGESTED THAT NDOLA WOULD BE SUITABLE BUT AGREED HE WOULD BE WILLING TO GO TO LONDON.

ON SEPTEMBER 29 - A FAMILIAR SCENE AT BRUSSELS AIRPORT AS THE STREAM OF BELGIANS RETURNING FROM KATANGA, WHERE THEY LIVED IN COMPARATIVE SAFETY AND FREEDOM, CONTINUED TO GROW, MANY OF THEM LEFT KATANGA BY CROSSING THE BORDER INTO NORTHERN RHODESIA WHERE THEY RECEIVED HELP FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND RED CROSS WORKERS.
