    The 14th. Annual Conference of the West African College of Surgeons was held recently in Lome, the capital of Tog. The conference took for its theme "Infant Surgery', although one day was set aside for delegates to read papers on general surgery. Eminent surgeons from France, Germany and the United States were among the Conference's 200 delegates.

    The six-day Conference was opened last Tuesday (8 January) by the Togolese Ministry of Public Health, Lieutenant-Colonel Albert Djafalo Alidou.

    The College has 12 member-nations. They are: Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leons, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Dahomey, Cameroun, Nigeria, Zaire and Togo. Three other countries -- Niger, Mali and Rwanda -- are taking part in the Conference for the first time.

    The main function of the West African College of Surgeons is to promote and organise graduate teaching in Surgery and to co-ordinate research. All qualified surgeons in West Africa are members.
