  • Description

A Venezuelan airliner made an emergency landing at Nicosia on Sunday (17 September) with a bomb aboard.

The bomb, found in a wastepaper basket near the plane's lavatories, was taken away by police disposal experts.

The airliner, a DCB of VIASA Airline, was carrying 95 passengers and a crew of II. It was en route from Beirut to Rome and Caracas, Venezuela.

It was diverted to Nicosia after the office of VIASA in Beirut received a telephoned warning that a bomb was aboard.

Airline officials said a personal feud may have been behind the attempted bombing. A man who was, apparently, the intended victim, did not board the plane at the last minute.

Police in Beirut detained three men in connection with the incident.
