  • Description

All 115 people aboard an Alitalia DC-8 jetliner were killed on Friday night (May 5) when the aircraft crashed into a mountainside and exploded in a ball of flame as it came in to land at Palermo airport in Sicily.

The disaster occurred on the 25th anniversary of Alitalia's foundation, and was the worst in its history. It was also Italy's worst ever air crash.

Police and soldiers toiled through the night to recover bodies which had been scattered over more than a mile (2 kms) from the point of impact on the hillside above Palermo's Punta Raisi airport.

Many passengers had been returning to the Sicilian capital for the general elections there on Sunday and Monday (May 7 and 8).

In Rome the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation ordered an inquiry into the disaster, which occurred in bad weather.
