  • Description

A DOWN-TO-DUSK CURFEW HAS BEEN CLAMPED ON DJAKARTA AS THE INDONESIAN CAPITAL CONTINUES TO SIMMER WITH UNREST FOLLOWING PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S CABINET RESHUFFLE. THE PRESIDENT IS SPENDING THE WEEKEND AT HIS BOGOR PALACE, 45 MILES (64 KILOMETRES) FROM THE CAPITAL, AFTER ORDERING THE POWERFUL STUDENTS ACTION COMMITTEE (KAMI) TO BE DISSOLVED FOR TRYING TO UNDERMINE HIS AUTHORITY. MASSED DEMONSTRATIONS BY STUDENTS HAVE BROUGHT TURMOIL TO DJAKARTA OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS AS THOUSANDS HAVE PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE CITY AND ATTEMPTED TO STORM THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT RESHUFFLE. THE STUDENTS CLAIM THAT THE CABINET CHANGES, INCLUDING THE DISMISSAL OF DEFENCE MINISTER, GENERAL NASUTION, REFLECT A SWING BACK TO COMMUNIST INFLUENCE - AT A TIME WHEN THE ARMY IS ENGAGED IN A BIG ANTI-COMMUNIST DRIVE. IN THURSDAY'S DEMONSTRATION WHEN STUDENTS ATTEMPTED TO STORM THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE AND STOP THE SWEARING-IN OF THE NEW CABINET, ONE STUDENT WAS SHOT BY THE PRESIDENTIAL GUARD. FRO HIS FUNERAL ON FRIDAY, 10,000 STUDENTS GATHERED IN DJAKARTA FOR THE PROCESSION TO THE CEMETERY.

WHILE HEAVILY ARMED TROOPS GUARDED THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE, THE DJAKARTA MILITARY GARRISON SENT A PLATOON OF TROOPS TO FIRE THE LAST SALUTE AT THE FUNERAL OF THE STUDENT, ARIFIN HAKIN. THE FUNERAL PROCESSION BEGAN AT THE UNIVERSITY AND THEN MARCHED THE FIVE MILES TO THE CEMETERY. 10,000 STUDENTS TOOK PART IN THE PROCESSION WHILE HUNDREDS OF OTHERS FOLLOWED IN MILITARY AND PRIVATE VEHICLES. SOME STUDENTS CARRIED PICTURES OF THEIR DEAD COLLEAGUE, WHILE OTHERS HELD PICTURES OF THE GENERALS KILLED IN THE ATTEMPTED OCTOBER COUP. THE BLOOD-STAINED SHIRT OF THE DEAD STUDENT WAS ALSO CARRIED BEHIND THE COFFIN.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES AND SHOPS STAYED CLOSED, AND THE RED AND WHITE NATIONAL FLAGS FLEW AT HALF-MAST FROM MANY HOMES AND SHOPS DJAKARTA.

STUDENTS LEADERS SAID WREATHS FOR THE DEAD YOUTH HAD COME FROM MANY HIGH-RANKING ARMY OFFICERS, INCLUDING THE ARMY MINISTER, LIEUTENANT GENERAL SUHARTO.
