  • Description

WHILE THIRTEEN COUNTRIES ARE EXPECTED TO RETAIN DIPLOMATIC CONTACT WITH THE NEWLY DECLARED REPUBLIC OF RHODESIA, MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL WERE TODAY (WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4TH) DEBATING THE ISSUE. THEY ARE CONSULTING ON BRITAIN'S PROPOSAL THAT THE WORLD BODY CONDEMN "THE PURPORTED ASSUMPTION OF A REPUBLICAN STATUS " BY RHODESIA, AND BLOCK RECOGNITION OF THE "ILLEGAL REGIME" BY ANY STATE.

THE UNITED STATES, FRANCE AND ELEVEN OTHER NATIONS HAVE INDICATED THEY INTEND TO RETAIN THEIR CONSULAR MISSIONS IN SALISBURY. HOWEVER, ONLY PORTUGAL AND SOUTH AFRICA ARE MAINTAINING HIGH-LEVEL REPRESENTATION IN THE RHODESIAN CAPITAL. SOME COUNTRIES THAT HAVE CONSULAR RELATIONS HAVE WITHDRAWN CAREER OFFICERS AND REPLACED THEM WITH LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES SERVING IN AN HONORARY CAPACITY.

THE BITTER CONFLICT WITH BRITAIN, WHICH BEGAN MORE THAN FOUR YEARS AGO WITH A DRAMATIC SEIZURE OF INDEPENDENCE, WENT BEYOND THE POINT OF NO RETURN ON MONDAY (MARCH 2ND), WHEN RHODESIA IRREVOCABLY SEVERED ITS TRADITIONAL TIES WITH THE BRITISH CROWN.

THE FINAL BREAK IN THE 80-YEAR ASSOCIATION WITH THE BRITISH MONARCHY ATTRACTED NEITHER EMOTION NOR EXCITEMENT AMONG THE COUNTRY'S 225-THOUSAND WHITES OR THE NEARLY FIVE MILLION AFRICANS, THERE WAS NO FANFARE- NO OFFICIAL CELEBRATIONS.
