  • Description

EXTRA POLICE WERE DRAFTED TO THE WIMBLEDON LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS TODAY (MONDAY) BECAUSE OF THREATENED ANTI-APARTHEID DEMONSTRATIONS. HOWEVER, ALL WAS PEACE AND QUIET.

BUT THE PROTEST AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA'S RACIAL POLICIES BY EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WAS CARRIED A STAGE FURTHER TODAY. THE SOVIET PLAYERS SERGEI LIKHACHEV AND ANNA DMITRIEVA SCRATCHED FROM THE MIXED DOUBLES. THEY WERE TO HAVE MET A SOUTH AFRICAN AND RHODESIAN PAIR. IT WAS THE FOURTH SUCH SCRATCHING IN THE CURRENT TOURNAMENT.

ON THE CENTRE COURT TODAY THE MEN'S SINGLES CHAMPION, CHUCH MCKINLEY, MET THE SOUTH AFRICAN LEFT-HANDER ABE SEGAL.

THE 23 YEAR-OLD CHUNKY AMERICAN HAD ALREADY SCRAMBLED THROUGH A TOUGH SERIES OF MATCHES AGAINST LEFT-HANDERS BEFORE MEETING SEGAL --TEN YEARS OLDER.

McKINLEY PLAYED A RELAXED AND SOMEWHAT HAPHAZARD GAME AGAINST THE EXPERIENCED SEGAL. HE NEVER REALLY LOOKED TROUBLED AND ONLY PUT ON THE PRESSURE AFTER LOSING THE THIRD SET 4-6. IN THE THIRD SET SEGAL HAD PINNED MCKINLEY TO THE BASELINE FORCING ERRORS. BUT FOR THE REST OF THE MATCH THE BOUNCING AMERICAN, IN SPITE OF SERVING SIX DOUBLE FAULTS, WAS ALWAYS ABLE TO HIT HIS WAY OUT OF TROUBLE WITH LITTLE DIFFICULTY.

    HE WON THE MATCH 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-4.

ALSO GOING INTO THE SEMI-FINAL: FRED STOLLE, THE AUSTRALIAN WHO MADE A SURPRISE APPEARANCE IN THE FINAL LAST YEAR. STOLLE GAVE IMPRESSIVE EVIDENCE OF IMPROVEMENT IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS AS HE CRUISED TO AN EASY THREE SET WIN OVER THE GERMAN, CHRISTIAN KUHNKE. KUHNKE, WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY BEATEN BRITAIN'S WILSON AND SPAIN'S SANTANA FOUND THE GREATEST DIFFICULTY IN PASSING THE LONG-ARMED GIANT WHOSE REACH SEEMED TO EXTEND THE LENGTH OF THE NET.

STOLLE WON IN STRAIGHT SETS: 6-3 7-5 6-3.
