    THE AREA AROUND THE TOWN OF PONTIAN, IN SOUTHERN MALAYA, WAS DECLARED A SECURITY AREA EARLY MONDAY MORNING (AUGUST 17) IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT WAS REPORTED THAT A FORCE OF HEAVILY ARMED INDONESIANS HAD LANDED ON THE COAST, WHICH FACES INDONESIA. POLICE AND TROOPS HAVE THROWN A TIGHT CORDON AROUND THE COASTAL AREA TO PREVENT THEM FROM PENETRATING INTO THE JUNGLE INTERIOR.

    AS SOON AS THE FORCE LANDED ON THE SWAMPY COAST NEAR PONTIAN, THEY WERE IMMEDIATELY ENGAGED BY MALAYAN SECURITY UNITS. SO FAR TWO OF THE INDONESIANS HAVE BEEN KILLED, AND A NUMBER OF CAPTURED, ACCORDING TO A STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE MALAYSIAN MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. THE CAPTIVES ARE BEING HELD IN THE PONTIAN POLICE STATION ABOUT A MILE (1.6 KMS) FROM WHERE THE LANDING TOOK PLACE. THE WHOLE SECURITY AND MOPPING UP OPERATION IS BEING DIRECTED FROM THE POLICE STATION.

    (SINCE THE LANDINGS "WAR EXECUTED COMMITTEES" HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED IN THE 11 STATES OF THE MALAYAN PENINSULA, WHILE SOME STATES HAVE BEGUN THE JOB OF ORGANISING 'VIGILANTE CORPS'.)
