Background: After a week of heavy snowfalls an avalanche overwhelmed the small village of Rochemolle. Feb 5, in the Italian mountains near the French border. Four people were killed in their homes when the weight of the snow crushed any building that lay in its path.
Only the quick action by rescue teams from nearby Bardonecchia prevented the death roll from being higher. Many of the 150 villagers were trapped under the fall for hours. With their villager destroyed the casualties were moved to Bardonecchia. Rescue workers and search parties toiled among the wreckage for twelve hours.
Throughout the Italian and French Alps snow storms and avalanches have cut off small town and villages. Railway and road transport is almost at a standstill. In several areas helicopters have been used to rescue mountaineers cut off by the continual storms.
