  • Description

IVRY GITLIS, ONE OF ISRAEL'S LEADING CONCERT VIOLINISTS, RECORDED A CHRISTMAS CAROL WITH A DIFFERENCE IN ABIDJAN, IVORY COAST, THIS WEEK -- "COME ALL YE FAITHFUL", SUNG IN YORUBA. THE VIOLINIST IS ON A CONCERT TOUR OF ABIDJAN ARRANGED BY THE FRENCH CULTURAL SERVICE.

THE BAPTIST CHURCH BAND OF ABIDJAN ALSO PROVIDED A PERCUSSIVE ACCOMPANIMENT TO GITLIS' PLAYING AND THE CHOIRS' SINGING. THE CHOIR IS MADE UP MAINLY OF YORUBAS, A WEST COAST NIGERIAN TRIBE.

OCCASIONALLY A RHUMBA BEAT CREPT INTO THE DRUMMER'S ACCOMPANIMENT. BUT IT MUST BE KEPT IN MIND THAT THE RHUMBA ORIGINATED WITH THE YORUBAS, AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY EXPORTED TO SOUTH AMERICA, WHERE IT HAS SINCE GAINED MOST OF ITS FAME.

GITLIS IS USING A GBP16,000 STERLING (40,000 DOLLAR) STRADIVARIUS VIOLIN ON HIS TOUR.
