Construction of bridges in the past has been an extremely costly venture. The builders required a large armada of barges, tug boats and assorted other water craft. But the use of huge helicopters may change this. The largest jet helicopter in the Western world is now being employed to aid in the construction of a new bridge near Annapolis, Maryland. The jet chopper can carry 18,000 pounds of concrete in a single load. The bridge over the Chesapeake Bay will take six months. But the cost of the rental of the helicopter is substantially less than the use of a small fleet of boats for the same period.
