  • Description

The South Korean car, the Pony, which caused a mild sensation when it was unveiled at the turin Motor Show in October 1974, finally went into production this month.

The car is the Pony, made by the Hyundai motor company oat Ulsan, 250 miles (351 kms) east of the capital, Seoul.

The car looks typically European. It was designed by Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro, of Ital-design, which has been involved in the design of many of Europe's cars, including the VW Golf, the Alfasud and Alfetta GT.

The Pony is a four-door saloon, seating four to five people. Under its attractive exterior, the Pony is simple and very strong as South Korea has mostly badly surfaced roads.

It has a Japanese Mitsubishi 1.25 libre four cylinder engine, because of its durability. The steering and the Front and rear brakes are being made under licence by Hyundai. They wore designed by British firms Burman and Girling.

Hyundai has made Ford Cortinas under licence since 1968. The firm, the biggest motor manufacturer in Korea, also makes trucks and buses under licence.

Hyundai plans to produce 56,000 Ponys in the first year of production, and aims for a production capacity of 300,000 a year in the early 1980's.

SYNOPSIS: The Ulsan Industrial area, 250 miles east of the South Korean capital, Seoul, and the home of the country's latest creation -- the Pony.

The Pony is the four door saloon car that caused a mild sensation when it was first released to the public at the 1974 Turin Motor Show. The car was designed by Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro, a member of the Ital-design team that has been responsible for the shape of many of Europe's top cars, including the Volkswagen Golf, the Alfasud and the Alfetta GT.

The new car is the ultimate achievement of the Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea's biggest motor manufacturer. But apart from its Italian-designed body, many of its components were designed overseas.

The engine is being made under licence from the giant Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation. It is the 1250 cubic centimetre Saturan engine, renowned for its durability. The brakes, both front and rear, and the steering were designed in Britain.

But the car is still Korean. Hyundai has used the best technology from overseas to produce the car best suited to the country, which still has mostly badly surfaced roads. The Pony is a sleek four door saloon, which seats four to five in comfort.

But under the attractive exterior is a tough, practical car. Hyundai plans to produce 56,000 Ponys in the first year of production, rising to 300,000 at production peak in the early 1900's. The company has made Ford Cortinas under licence since 1968 and dominates the passenger car market with an 80 per cent share.
