Background: South African Prime Minister, Mr. John Vorster, has signed 60 Treaties with the black Transkei Homeland, clearing the way for its independence next month.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Vorster signed the treaties in Pretoria on Friday (17 September). They cover practically the whole field of international relations. Subjects included a non-aggression pact, economic and industrial development, civil aviation and health services. The Transkei will be given its independence. Its next step will be to hold a general election.
The Transkei's Chief Minister, paramount Chief Kaiser Matanzima, signed the treaties on behalf of the homeland. The agreements also provide for continued financial and administrative aid to the Transkei by the South African government. South Africa has already handed over control of a defence base to the recently formed Transkei Defence Force.
