  • Description

Cambodian and South Vietnamese troops have joined forces for a massive drive against the Viet Cong in the Tonli Bati area, 20 miles (32 kms) south of Phnom Penh.

All told, 10,000 men are taking part in the operation which is aimed at flushing out the guerrillas from jungled hill country. Military sources had estimated up to 1,500 Viet Cong troops in the area.

But as the push got underway on Sunday, the first casualties were South Vietnamese. One marine was killed and three others wounded during initial light contact with the Viet Cong. The wounded were evacuated by South Vietnamese helicopters.

Several Cambodians, suspected of being Viet Cong sympathisers, were rounded up for questioning as the joint force pushed slowly into the Tonli bati area.

The troops were supported by 155mm artillery fire from the Cambodians. Subsequent reports said that only give Viet Cong had been killed -- victims of the support missions flown by South Vietnamese jets. And there was still no sign of the Viet Cong base which leaders of the operation suspected might be hidden in the heavily wooded area.
