  • Description

PRESIDENT JOHNSON STAGED A VOTE-CATCHING DRIVE ACROSS INDIANA AND OHIO YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AND REPEATED PREDICTIONS THAT HE EXPECTS TO WIN THE BIGGEST ELECTION LANDSLIDE IN HISTORY NEXT MONTH.

THE PRESIDENT HAD ABOUT 30,000 PEOPLE IN HIS AUDIENCE IN EAST CHICAGO, AND INDIANA CITY OF 54,000. HE TOLD THEM HE HADN'T COME "TO SLING MUD AND SAY UGLY THINGS". HE SAID: "YOU GO AND VOTE, AND YOU VOTE FOR THE MAN WHO, IN YOUR JUDGEMENT, IS MOST LIKELY TO PROTECT YOUR PROSPERITY, YOUR HOME, YOUR SAFETY. THE MAN MOST LIKELY TO PRESERVE PEACE IN THE WORLD."
EVERYWHERE HE WENT THE PRESIDENT GREETED THE PEOPLE WITH EXUBERANCE, WITH OUT-THRUST HANDS AND A FRIENDLY WORD, WITH HANDSHAKES, AND WITH KISSES FOR THE BABY.

IT WAS AT INDIANAPOLIS THAT PRESIDENT JOHNSON QUESTIONED WHETHER THERE WAS A "REAL" REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE THIS YEAR. SPEAKING IN A STATE THAT HASN'T GONE DEMOCRATIC SINCE ROOSEVELT'S VICTORY IN 1936, HE SAID THE CHOICE THEN WAS BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE FUTURE. IT WAS MUCH THE SAME TODAY, BUT THERE WAS ONE GREAT DIFFERENCE. "WE LOOKED TO THE FUTURE IN 1936 FROM WHAT WAS STILL A DEEP VALLEY OF DEPRESSION. WE LOOK TO THE FUTURE TODAY FROM THE HILLTOP OF CONFIDENCE.

IN MOST OF HIS SPEECHES THE PRESIDENT APPEALED FOR LIBERALISATION OF IMMIGRATION LAWS AND PROMISED CONTINUED GROWTH OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.

(MRS. JOHNSON, WHO HAS BEEN CAMPAIGNING FOR HER HUSBAND IN NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA, YESTERDAY CARRIED HER BID TO WIN BACK TRADITIONALLY DEMOCRATIC SOUTHERN VOTERS INTO GEORGIA. SHE HAS BEEN HECKLED BY SOUTHERNERS WHO HAVE OBJECTED TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S SUPPORT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL).
