Background: Members of the Iraqi Mujahedin and Iraqis living in exile took to the streets of Teheran on March 8 to demonstrate over Iraqi representation at the Non-Aligned conference in New Delhi. Carrying banners supporting the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic revolution in Iraq, and posters of Iran's religious leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, they marched on the Indian embassy to deliver their protest note. A message of support was received from a senior member of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Seyed Mohammed Bagher Hakim. As well as calling for the replacement of the Iraqi government delegation by Supreme Assembly members, Ayatollah Hakim accused Iraqi President Saddam Hussein of becoming subservient to nations supplying his forces with arms -- France, Britain and the United States. The protesters rallied outside the Indian embassy and demanded the suspension of Iraq's membership from the Non-Aligned conference on the grounds that the Hussein regime had violated the principles of Non-Aligned countries. Ayatollah Hakim's message claimed Baghdad had attempted to annexe part of Iran's territory during the 29-month-old-Gulf war, had completely disregarded international laws during the fighting, and ignored the Algerian Treaty of 1975. The demonstration also opposed a proposal that Iraq be the venue for the next Non-Aligned summit.
