The project was started in May 1973 when the young people of the area came forward and began casting concrete blocks. Many of the older people of the district came forward to help and within ten days they had made more than 15,000 blocks.
The scheme was launched officially on 8 July 1973 by President Stevens.
Last week's official opening was of a modern hospital complex comprising a male and female ward of 36 beds each, a maternity block of 18 beds, a dental block, a laundry block, a boiler room and a partially-completed X-ray block.
The opening ceremony was attended by Vice-President and Prime Minister Sorie Ibrahim Koroma who was born in the area and was the driving force behind the project. Minister of Finance C.A. Kamara-Taylor was also present.
