  • Description

Angry motorists clashed with dozens of pyjama-clad hospital patients who went into the streets of Rome on Saturday (November 28) and staged a "lie-down" protect demonstration in the busy through fares against the inconvenience caused to them by a three-day strike of hospital cleaning staff and assistants.

The patients, in wheelchairs and stretchers pushed by some of their fitter hospitalised colleagues, blocked traffic throughout the morning in two central streets.

Some lay on stretchers in the Middle of the road while others hobbled from their wheelchairs and sat and lay in the centre of the road completely blocking the passage of motorists. The motorists quickly became angry and heated verbal clashes followed. Efforts by the police to move on the patients had little effect. The scene was macabre.

The Rome morning temperature was near freezing.

Some of the fitter patients returned to hospital later with minor injuries caused when the angry motorists forgot their better natures and became violent. But the remainder of the 30-strong group of indisposed protestors stuck to their posts until midday.
