  • Description

A munitions barge exploded in the Dutch inland port of Utrecht today (Monday), shattering port installations, a dyke and killing two people. At least 18 others were seriously injured and many other slightly.

The explosion is reported to have been caused when a soldier helping to unload the barge dropped a grenade in the hold.

The vessel was torn in two and the stern hurled 80 yards (metres) away, smashing a dyke which in turn buried railway goods wagons standing behind it.

A man fishing nearby said he saw 15 soldiers unloading the cargo of grenades. He said one soldier dropped a grenade into the hold. All the soldiers then made for cover.

A nearby electric power station was put out of action temporarily and thousands of windows damaged over a wide area. Trucks and other vehicles on the quay were also damaged.
