Background: A revamped national team failed to restore Italy's sagging soccer reputation on Saturday (19 April) when they drew nil-all with Poland in a European Championship "Group Five" qualifying match in Rome.
Italy is now unlikely to reach next year's quarter finals after the experiment team failed to live up to the hopes of the national trainer, Fulvio Bernardini.
Bernardini was told to produce a new team after Italy's dismal elimination in the early rounds of the World Cup final in West Germany last year.
None of Saturday's team however looked ready to step into the boots of Italy's past greats.
They were weak in almost every department and only the defence, stiffened by veteran captain, Giancinto Facchetti, and the promising newcomer, Francesco Rocca, ever looked stylish.
The Poles obviously had trouble in the 22 degrees centigrade heat and after mounting some dangerous attacks in the early part of the first half, they were content to 1st Italy's attack wear itself out against its strong defence.
