Pope Paul is in Australia on the third leg of his Pacific tour. His Alitalia?

  • Description

Pope Paul is in Australia on the third leg of his Pacific tour. His Alitalia jet touched down in Sydney just before sunset yesterday (Monday) at the start of his four-day visit to Australia.

A gusty wind played havoc with the Roman Catholic Fontiff's scarlet cloak as he stopped from the plane. He was greeted by the Australian Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton, and members of the Australian Cabinet.

A crowd of about 4,000 turned out to cheer him at the airport and thousands more lined the route into Sydney when later the Pope drove to a civic welcome at the Town Hall.

In a speech at the airport, Pope Paul expressed friendship and warn affection for all the people of Australia. Later, a member of his party said the Pope was delighted with the warmth of his reception.

On Thursday, he flies to Djakarta for an overnight visit before going on to brief calls at Hong Kong and Colombo.
