Background: On January 16, 1968 one thousand Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) paratroopers load onto C-123 "Provider" transports and prepare to make a mass para-drop into the area ten miles north of Vung Tau in the Makong delta region of South Vietnam.

The aircraft, part of the U.S. Air Force's 315th Air Commando Wing based at Phan Reng Air Base, each carry 43 of the ARVN paratroopers in combat gear.

Fifteen "Providers" were used in the air lift and each flew two sorties.

Two of the transports carry maintenance personnel and equipment, another drops the Army combat control team which marks the drop some, and the remaining 12 carry the ARVN jumpers.
