HOWEVER THE ENTHUSIASM BY SADAT AND BEGIN TO H JOIN CARTER FOR TALKS WAS AN ENCOURAGING SIGN. SEN FRANK CHURCH A SAID THAT HE SAW GOOD REASONS WHY SUCH A MEETING WOULD WORK...THAT THE TWO SIDES WERE NOT SO FAR APART AS SOME MIGHT THINK...SEN CHARLES PERCY SAID EXPRESSED HOPE THAT KING HUSSEIN MIGHT SUPPORT THE TALKS ...AND PERHAPS BECOME PART OF THEM AT SOME POINT IT WAS I IMPORTANT THAT SADAT HAVE SUPPORT AND THAT HE NOT BE ALONE. CHURCH SAID THE COMMITTEE WAS UNANIMOUS IN SUPPORT IN OF CARTER'S INITIATIVE. VANCE, COMMENTING ON THE NEW WEST BANK SETTLEMENTS NOTED THAT THESE HAD BEEN POSTPONED AND RESTATED THE US POSITION ...SIMPLY THAT THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE SETTLEMENTS.
