Background: A RUSSIAN TRADE MISSION ARRIVED IN SINGAPORE LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) TO EXPLORE POSSIBILITIES OF RUSSIAN PARTICIPATION IN THE REPUBLIC'S INDUSTRIALISATION PROGRAMME. ON HAND TO GREET THEM WERE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND SCORES OF BUSINESSMEN.

THE SEVEN-MEMBER MISSION IS LED BY MR. V.B. SPANDARIAN, WHO HEADS THE SOUTH-EAST ASIAN DEPARTMENT OF THE SOVIET MINISTRY OF FOREIGN TRADE.

SPEAKING AT A PRESS CONFERENCE, MR.SPANDARIAN SAID THEY WERE READY TO DEVELOP TRADE AND ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION BETWEEN RUSSIA AND SINGAPORE, ADDING THAT RUSSIA DOES NOT IMPOSE TARIFFS ON GOODS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.

IN ANSWER TO A QUESTION, HE SAID HE WAS NOT QUIT CERTAIN YET OF THE TYPE OF ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION THAT COULD BE DEVELOPED AS HE WAS NOT CONVERSANT WITH SINGAPORE'S NEEDS. BUT, HOWEVER, HE THOUGHT IT WITH LIKELY THAT SINGAPORE WOULD WANT TO BUY HEAVY MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENTS FROM RUSSIA. IN RETURN RUSSIA WOULD PROBABLY START WITH BUYING RUBBER DIRECTLY FROM THE REPUBLIC.

RUSSIA HAS TRADE AGREEMENTS WITH A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES IN ASIA, NOTABLE AMONG THEM BEING INDIA, PAKISTAN, THAILAND AND JAPAN.
