Background: Colonel Nasser, newly elected President of the United Arab Republic, arrived among his "unanimous supporters" in Damascus today.
A small group of Syrian junta officers had waited at the airport to greet their newly appointed Syro-Egyptian Supremo, Field Marshal Hakim Amer, of the Egyptian Army. But, to their amazement, when the door of the aircraft opened who should walk out first but President Nasser.
Accompanied by Supremo Amer, Ali Sabri, Sadat and others, he drove off almost at once to the palace of the astonished ex-President Kuwatly and began to go through the motions of addressing enthusiastic crowds.
But the surreptitious nature of his arrival here today may be more eloquent of the true situation in Syria than the Damascus politicians' speeches extolling him.
