Background: WORLD CHAMPIONS ENGLAND DOMINATED PORTUGAL IN TONIGHT'S (WEDNESDAY'S) FRIENDLY SOCCER INTERNATIONAL AT WEMBLEY, BUT THEIR INABILITY TO TURN TERRITORIAL MASTERY INTO GOALS AGAINST A VISITING SIDE WEAKENED BY THE ABSENCE OF EUSEBIO AND TORRES (THROUGH INJURY) EARNED THEM SLOW HANDCLAPS FROM THE 100,000-CAPACITY CROWD.

PORTUGAL WERE ANXIOUS TO REGAIN THE PRESTIGE THEY LOST BY FAILING TO QUALIFY FOR THE 1970 WORLD CUP, BUT WITH TWO STARS MISSING WERE ENABLE TO HOLD OFF THE ENGLAND ATTACK. WINGER JACINTO MADE SOME GOOD BREAKS, BUT FOUND LITTLE SUPPORT.

ENGLAND TEASED AND TORMENTED PORTUGAL THROUGH THE OPENING HALF HOUR, BUT SOMEHOW THE GOALS DID NOT COME. THEIR SOLE REWARD CAME IN THE 23RD MINUTE WHEN PORTUGAL'S HARD-PRESSED GOALKEEPER HENRIQUES CONCEDED A CORNER.

BOBBY CHARLTON TOOK THE KICK AND HIS BROTHER JACKIE HEADED FOR GOAL. HALF TIME SCORE; ENGLAND 1 PORTUGAL 0.

PORTUGAL HAD A CHANCE TO EQUALIZE IN THE SECOND HALF BUT A FINE FREE KICK WAS DRAMATICALLY PUNCHED CLEAR BY ENGLAND GOALIE BONETTI.

AS ENGLAND ATTACKED AGAIN, CENTRE-FORWARD JEFF ASTLE WAS BROUGHT DOWN IN THE PORTUGUESE GOALMOUTH. LEE TOOK THE PENALTY BUT SHOT WIDE OF THE GOAL. SOME OF THE ENGLAND PLAYERS SEEMED TO THINK HE HAD BEEN DISTRACTED BY THE OTHER SIDE, BUT THE REFEREE DID NOT AGREE. SO IN THE FINAL SCORE REMAINED 1-0.
