  • Description

Representatives from many of the world's coffee-producing nations gathered in London on Monday (17 August) for the start of the 17th International Coffee Conference. The 62-nation International Coffee Organisation sets the annual export quotas and prices for the new coffee year.

The annual conference was adjourned shortly after Monday's official opening to allow a variety of study groups to carry on independent work.

According to conference sources, the meeting's main task when it re-opens on Thursday (20 August) will be to analyze shipments between the present time and the end of the current coffee year on September 30. The Conference is also expected to examine the way in which shipments affect prices and stock levels in the consumer countries.

Earlier, Brazil's Minister of Industry and the leader of his country's delegation to the Conference, Mr Marcus Pratani de Morais, said his country would work to assure equitable prices for coffee.

Among the countries represented are the Ivory Coast, Gabon, Cameroun, the Central African Republic, Colombia and Ethiopia.

The current Chairman is Mr A. Sawadogo of the Ivory Coast and the Secretary is Mr M. Mendez Silva of Brazil. The Organisation's Executive Director is Mr A.F. Beltrao, also of Brazil.
