    SOME 200 ZAMBIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE THE GOVERNMENT HEADQUARTERS IN LUSAKA ON THURSDAY (8 JULY). THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST ALLEGED POLICE BRUTALITY IN QUELLING A RIOT THE DAY BEFORE AT THE FRENCH EMBASSY. THE MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS, MR. CHAMGUFU, TOLD THE STUDENTS THAT THEIR COMPLAINTS WOULD BE DEALT WITH IMMEDIATELY.

    DURING THE RIOT THE PREVIOUS DAY, A STUDENT WAS SHOT AND OTHERS WERE TREATED FOR THE EFFECTS OF TEAR GAS WHEN 1,000 STUDENTS HURLED ROCKS AND BOTTLES AT THE FRENCH EMBASSY, THEN CLASHED WITH POLICE. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PROTESTING AT FRANCE'S DECISION TO LET SOUTH AFRICA MANUFACTURE MIRAGE JET FIGHTERS UNDER LICENCE.

    SYNOPSIS: OUTSIDE THE GOVERNMENT HEADQUARTERS IN LUSAKA ON THURSDAY, SOME 200 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED AGAINST ALLEGED POLICE BRUTALITY THE DAY BEFORE DURING A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE FRENCH EMBASSY. ONE STUDENT WAS SHOT BY POLICE AND OTHERS HAVE BEEN TREATED FOR THE EFFECTS OF TEAR GAS. FIFTY STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED - THIS IS ONE OF THOSE RELEASED.

    THE VICE-CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY, PROFESSOR GOMA, ASKED THE STUDENTS TO RETURN TO THE CAMPUS AND MAKE THEIR PROTEST IN AN ORDERLY FASHION, BY DRAWING UP A PETITION. THE STUDENTS PROTEST OUTSIDE THE FRENCH EMBASSY HAD BEEN AGAINST THE FRENCH DECISION TO ALLOW SOUTH AFRICA TO MANUFACTURE MIRAGE JET FIGHTERS UNDER LICENCE.

    THE ALLEGED POLICE BRUTALITY IS SAID TO HAVE OCCURRED WHEN THE STUDENTS BEGAN TO THROW STONES AND BOTTLES AT THE WINDOWS OF THE FRENCH EMBASSY, MAKING THE FRENCH DIPLOMATS DIVE FOR COVER. THE STUDENTS CLIMBED THE WALL AND TORE DOWN THE FRENCH FLAG. THEN THE ZAMBIAN POLICE MOVED IN WITH BATON CHARGES AND TEAR GAS, MAKING 50 ARRESTS AND SERIOUSLY INJURING TWO STUDENTS. THE CLASHES LASTED FOUR HOURS.

    THE MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS, MR. CHANGUFU, TOLD THE STUDENTS THAT THERE WOULD BE AN IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION OF THEIR COMPLAINTS, AND APPEALED FOR THEM TO RETURN TO THEIR HOMES.
