The Finn Timo Makinen GBP 250 (6000 U.S. dollars) for the fastest overall time on the Chilean stage, ending on May 14th, of the London Daily Mirror World Cup Rally. On the 15th of May Makinen was second in the overall placing behind another Finn, Hannu Mikkola, also driving a Ford Escort.
Makinen was the first man to arrive in Nos, a quiet village 20 kilometres (12.4 miles south of Santiago, after also leading into Chilean territory through Paso Puyenhue.
On Thursday (May 15th) the forty-two cars still in the rally set off on the most gruelling stage of the race, the 150-mile run through the Andes foothills, reaching an altitude of 14,000 feet. At times the drivers had to use oxygen.
The leading crews - including Mikkola and British soccer star Jimmy Greaves, now lying sixth - took a gamble in deliberately delaying their start on the stage to La Paz, so that they could tackle the high section in daylight.
Fifty-five cars have already dropped out on the rally, which ends in Mexico City on May 27.
