  • Description

President Kenneth Kaunda attacked apartheid during his opening speech to a meeting of 500 African Church leaders in Lusaka, Zambia, on Sunday (12 May).

President Kaunda, a deeply religious man, wept for almost five minutes during the speech to the third assembly of the all African Conference of Churches.

President Kaunda had told the delegates representing 48 million Christians that the dominant feature of the capitalist system was the exploitation of one man by another accompanied in South Africa by unbridled suppression and denial of civil liberties.

The President continued, "We have had people professing to be Christians" ...and then broke down as he was about to add -- "holding the bible in one hand and the gun in the other."
He said South Africa had been responsible for the human suffering which Africa had experienced since the days of the salve trade. He praised liberation movements and the Church for fighting injustice in the area and said Africans would eventually achieve majority rule whatever happened.

President Kaunda was however at pains to stress the need for forgiveness during his speech.

The all African Conference of Churches groupe 103 Protestant, Coptic and Independent Churches in 31 African countries. The Roman Catholic Church is not a member but an observer form the Vatican is attending the ten day meeting, which ends on 22 May.
