WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED AS A PRIVATE TRIP TO WASHINGTON, BECAME SEMI-OFFICIAL WHEN THE MONARCH OF THE TINY KINGDOM IN THE HEART OF CENTRAL AFRICA, WAS RECEIVED WITH MILITARY HONOURS AT WASHINGTON AIRPORT, WHERE HE HAD BEEN WELCOMED BY UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE GEORGE BALL.

    THE TWO LEADERS EXCHANGE GIFTS, BEFORE KING MWAMBUTSA LEFT FOR THE STATE DEPARTMENT WHERE HE WAS WELCOMED BY MR. DEAN RUSK. THEY WERE ENTERTAINED TO AN EXCITING DISPLAY OF DRUMMING AND DANCING BY A GROUP OF WATUTSI DANCERS.

    DURING HIS TWO DAYS IN WASHINGTON, THE KING WAS EXPECTED TO HAVE DISCUSSIONS WITH U.S. OFFICIALS ABOUT ONE OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS FACING HIS KINGDOM -- THE INFLUX OF 100,000 REFUGEES FROM THE NEIGHBOURING RUANDA.
