  • Description

Delegates gathered at the White House in Washington yesterday (Thursday 14th May) for the first day of the annual meeting of the five-nation CENTO group, were joined for an hour by President Nixon.

The White House Cabinet Room became the scene of a heavy working session as the President conferred with the Central Treaty Organisation Ministers. Secretary of State Rogers, and Dr. Henry Kissinger..... the President's National Security Affairs Adviser..... attended along with Mr. Joseph Sisco, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs who'd been called in to report on his recent tour. No statement was issued following discussions with the President.

The Central Treaty Organisation was formed seventeen years ago to defend Turkey, Iran and Pakistan from Communist subversion and aggression.

At the opening session of the annual meeting earlier in the day British Foreign Secretary Michael Stewart has said that the threat which led to the forging of the alliance may have changed, but had not disappeared. He felt it was essential member nations should make sure CENTO continued to contribute to the stability and prosperity of such a vital region of the world.
