    MR. HAMMARSKJOELD DIED IN AN ATTEMPT TO BRING PEACE TO THE CONGO. HIS PLANE CRASHED AT NDOLA, NEAR KITWE, AS HE WAS FLYING TO A MEETING WITH PRESIDENT TSHOMBE, THEN THE LEADER OF SECESSIONIST KATANGA.

    THE BUST AT THE ECUMENICAL FOUNDATION WAS UNVEILED IN A SOLEMN CEREMONY THAT MARKED THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF MR HAMMARSKJOELD'S DEATH. TWO HUNDRED GUESTS HEARD MR R. EKEUS, REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SWEDISH GOVERNMENT, AND PRESIDENT KAUNDA SPEAKING.

    THERE WERE ALSO READINGS FROM MR HAMMARSKJOELD'S BOOK, 'MARKINGS'. THEN MRS GRENVILLE-GREY, WIFE OF THE FOUNDATION'S PRINCIPAL, GAVE THE PRESIDENT A PICTURE OF THE LATE SECRETARY GENERAL.

    PRESIDENT KAUNDA SAID THAT HE HAD PERSONALLY WRITTEN TO U THANT, MR HAMMARSKJOELD'S SUCCESSOR AT THE UNITED NATIONS, APPEALING TO HIM TO ACCEPT A SECOND TERM IN OFFICE.
