Mrs. Indira Gandhi was formally re-elected leader of the Parliamentary Group of India's ruling Congress?
Mrs. Indira Gandhi was formally re-elected leader of the Parliamentary Group of India's ruling Congress Party in New Delhi on Wednesday (17 March 1971). The reaffirmation of her position as Prime Minister of India's 550 million people enabled her to go ahead with formation of a new Cabinet after her recent sweeping election victory. Congress won 350 of the 521 seats in the Lower House of Parliament and now has two seats more than the two-thirds majority it needs to push through constitutional changes without support from other Parliamentary groups. Mrs. Gandhi, who first became Prime Minister in February 1966, was proposed as party leader by its president, Mr. Jagjivan Ram, and seconded by India's Finance Minister, Mr. Yeshwantrao Chavan.
