  • Description

More than 184 thousand miles (296,000 kilometres) out into space Apollo-17 Commands Ship pilot. Ronald Evans squeezed out through the hatch of the homeward-bound spacecraft "America" on Sunday (17 December) and half-walked, half-floated in space to retrieve the mission's important film cassettes from cameras and scientific sunders. A television camera deployed on a boom gave earth viewers a clear picture of Evans silhouetted against the darkness of space. As he left the cabin he waved back to his crewmates and sang and hummed happily to himself as he went about his tasks. The films he collected were taken by the mapping and panoramic cameras, and the linear radar sounder, which probed the moon's sub-surface during orbit ... all housed in a bay of the spacecraft's service module, utilities and rocket section, which will be jettisoned before re-entry into the earth's atmosphere. Evens showed no signs of the stomach trouble which had bothered him earlier on the mission.
