    Charles Van Doren and 13 other winners of big money prizes on US TV quiz shows "Twenty One" and "Tic Tac Dough" surrendered Oct 17 to Manhattan's District Attorney on perjury charges, and were subsequently arrested.

    They are accused of lying before grand jury when they testified under oath that they never received assistance from anyone connected with the programmes prior to their appearances. The charge is "second degree perjury", and the maximum sentence is a year in jail and a 500-dollar fine.

    Notable winners among the arrested are Elfrida von Nardroff, aged 35, who was top winner on "Twenty One" with a prize of 220,500 dollars; 31-year-old public relations man Hank Bloomgarden, who won 98,500 dollars. Van Doren - 34-year-old former Columbia University instructor - won 129,000 dollars.

    The hearings were adjourned to Nov. 10, except in one case, for which the trial will begin Nov. 3. Van Doren originally testified before a grand jury that he had never received assistance on the quiz programme, but later broke down before an investigating Congressional sub-committee and admitted he had receive help. At District Attorney's office none of the accused would comment.

    The accused also included; Mrs. Vivienne Nearing, 35, who won $5,500 on "Twenty-One". Paul Bain, 43, $2,500 on "Twenty-One". Mrs. Henriette Dudley, 51, $4,100 on "Tic Tac Dough". Morton Harelik, 37, $500 on "Tic Tac Dough". Timothy Horan, 39, $35,200 on "Tic Tac Dough". Richard Klein, 41, $3,000 on "Twenty-One" and "Tic Tac Dough". David Mayer, 39, $47,500 on "Twenty-One". Ruth Miller, 50, $2,500 on "Twenty-One". Joseph Rosner, 46, $1,700 on "Tic Tac Dough." Mrs. Patricia Sullivan, 37, $14,3000 on "Tic Tac Dough." and Dr. Michael Truppin, 34, $13,000 on "Tic Tac Dough".
