  • Description

Japanese Premier Nobuske Kishi arrived at London Airport July 13 for a four day visit as guest of the British Government.

Expected to land at midday July 12 the Prime Minister's aircraft was more than 14 hours late due to engine trouble.

Mr. Kishi will confer with Prime Minister Macmillan, Chancellor of the Exchequer Heathcoat Amory, visit a nuclear power station by helicopter, pay a call on Sir Winston Churchill in London and listen to question Time in the House of Commons.

He carries a letter of greeting from Emperor Hirochito to the British Royal Family. Before leaving Tokyo he told a press conference that the possibility of a world tour by Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko had been discussed but that he personally would not discuss it while in London.

Mr. Kishi's visit is largely of goodwill but his talks in London are expected to help negotiations for a commercial treaty and settle Britain's outstanding claims for compensation for damage to British property in China during the Sino-Chinese war of 1937-41 with a payment of about 500 million yens - about GBP500,000.

The Prime Minister's London visit begins an extensive fact finding tour of eleven European & South American countries. In the past two years he visited the U.S., South East Asia - where he seeks a broader international approach to development - and to Australasia.

Mr. Kishi, 63, became Prime Minister inn 1957. After Japan's World War Two surrender he spent over three years in prison on an Allied charge of suspected war crimes. No case was found against him. He returned to public life seven years ago.
