SYNOPSIS: Delegates from 95 so-called Third World nations gathered in Lima on Monday for the opening of a two-week conference to map out a joint strategy on pressing economic and social problems. The delegates, who are estimated to represent a total population of some 1,600 million people in Africa, Asia and Latin America, were scheduled to begin three days of committee work before beginning their first ministerial meetings.

The meeting is being held under the auspices of the United Nations, and is commonly known as the 77 Conference -- taking its name from the number of countries which attended the first such conference in Algeria four years ago. A primary aim of the conference is to adopt a common policy for the Third United nations Conference on Trade and Development, which has been scheduled to take place in Santiago, Chile, next April. Reports from Lima have already indicated that many of the delegates have failed to agree over the common policy.

Later, Peruvian Foreign Minister General Edgardo Mercado Jarrin, in his opening address to the conference told the delegates that it was time for them to face up to the developed countries of the World and demand a fair deal in economic affairs. He also told delegates that they were not out for conflict, but that they should demand respect from world powers.
