  • Description

THE HEAD OF ONE OF THE FOUR GIANT STATUES OF RAMESES II, FLANKING THE ENTRANCE TO HIS TEMPLE AT ABU SIMBEL ON THE BANK OF THE RIVER NILE, WAS MOVED THIS WEEK TO THE SITE WHERE THE TEMPLE IS BEING REBUILT ON THE EDGE OF THE ASWAN DAM.

THE MONUMENT TO PHARAOH RAMESES 11, PERHAPS THE GRANDEST AND THE BEST OF THE MONUMENTS ON THE NILE, IS BEING SAVED FROM LOSS UNDER THE WATERS OF THE ASWAN DAM.

OF THREE SCHEMES SUBMITTED, AN ITALIAN PLAN TO REBUILD IT COMPLETELY WAS SELECTED AS THE MOST PRACTICAL AND LEAST EXPENSIVE.

ABU SIMBEL, 35 MILES (56 KMS) FROM THE SUDANESE BORDER, IS A NATURAL BAY ON THE RIVER. THE TEMPLE WAS HEWN OUT OF SANDSTONE CLIFFS, RISING 250 FEET (76 METRES), SOME 3,000 YEARS AGO.

MUCH OF THE TEMPLE OF THE SUN GOD AMUN-RE AND THE FOUR STATUES HAVE BEEN DISMANTLED AND ASSEMBLED ON THE NEW SITE BUT THE PROJECT STILL HAS A LONG WAY TO GO. IT WAS ORIGINALLY ESTIMATED IT WOULD TAKE FOUR TO SIX YEARS.

THE ENTIRE MONUMENT HAS BEEN CUT BY HAND INTO SOME 13,000 PIECES, ALL OF WHICH ARE BEING CAREFULLY MOVED TO THE NEW SITE.
