Background: The first West German Ambassador to Syria in ten years, Mr Ulrich von Rham, presented his credentials to President Hafez Al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday (4 March).
Syria and West Germany resumed diplomatic relations late last year. The decision was announced by the Syrian Government in August last year, following similar moves by a number of Arab countries.
Syria and other Arab countries severed relations with West Germany ten years ago when it recognised Israel.
Since the resumption, West Germany has offered Syria financial assistance of DM 180 million (about 33 million pounds sterling) over a three-year period. The economic agreement also provides for German technical assistance to Syria.
West Germany still has diplomatic relations with Israel.
