Background: The United States' astronauts in the Apollo-Soyuz space link-up mission met Egyptian president Anwar Sadat during a visit to Cairo on Saturday (7 February).

During their two day visit the astronauts, Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand and Donald Slayton, will speak to Egyptian scientists about the results of their space trip last year.

During the Apllo-Soyuz mission in July, 1975, the American and Soviet astronauts joined capsules in space.

In Cairo, the astronauts, accompanied by Dr. Farouk Al Baz, director of the Centre for Earth and Planetary Studies of the Air and Space Museum in Washington, will show the scientists how photos taken from space benefit man on earth.

The astronauts believe the space photos can provide precise information for locating new highways, choosing sites for new towns, and controlling erosion.

The space photos are particularly valuable to the developing Middle East countries.

Colour variations in desert sand provide clues to copper and iron ore deposits, and geologists at Egypt's Ain Shams University are studying the country's Western Desert.

During their short stay in Egypt, the three astronauts took time off to see the country's famous pyramids.

They will also visit Algeria, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
