  • Description

THE INITIAL TEACHING ALPHABET, BETTER KNOWN AS ITA, THE READING SYSTEM BASED ON LETTERS AND SYMBOLS, HAS WON SUPPORT FROM BRITAIN'S SCHOOLS COUNCIL, A GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED ORGANISATION WHICH REVIEWS CURRICULA AND TEACHING METHODS. ITA HAS BEEN IN USE IN BRITAIN FOR EIGHT YEARS AND IS NOW EMPLOYED IN ABOUT A THIRD OF THE COUNTRY'S PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

ITA IS MADE UP OF 44 LETTERS AND SYMBOLS INSTEAD OF THE USUAL 26 LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET. IT LINKS A SYMBOL TO EACH SOUND IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE; THE LETTERS IN MANY WORDS DON'T ACCURATELY REFLECT THEIR REAL SOUNDS.

THE SCHOOLS COUNCIL REPORT, PUBLISHED AFTER SEVERAL YEARS RESEARCH, SAYS THE EVIDENCE SUGGESTS VERY STRONGLY THAT ITA IS A MORE EFFICIENT WAY OF TEACHING BEGINNERS...YOUNG CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED TO READ EARLIER, MORE EASILY AND AT A FASTER RATE THAN NORMAL METHODS. HOWEVER, THE REPORT ADDS THAT ITA IS NOT NECESSARILY THE FINAL AND ONLY SOLUTION. MORE RESEARCH MUST BE DONE INTO OTHER METHODS AND INTO HOW CHILDREN LEARN TO READ.

AT PRESENT ONE OUT OF TEN CHILDREN IN BRITAIN LEAVE SCHOOL UNABLE TO READ PROPERLY.
