Background: INTRODUCTION: Mexico, Munich, Montreal and Moscow -- four major cities with one thing in common: they've all acquired entirely new suburbs thanks to the Olympic Games. But unlike the other cities, the Soviet capital has no private houses. The Moscow Village simply extends one of the world's largest areas of apartment dwellings.

SYNOPSIS: For the Muscovites who will occupy the area, the Village offers the city's biggest improvement of living conditions for many years. The vast complex includes a complete block of shops and restaurants, swimming pools and a gymnasium. And there is also a cinema and large playing fields. The apartments themselves are spacious and well-designed. The main disadvantage is that the Village is beyond the outer limit of the Moscow subway. Residents will have to rely on the capital's bus system.

The Village was designed to accommodate 12,000 athletes. Now it will have more than 14,000 permanent residents in nearly 3,500 apartments. Part of the large administrative centre has been converted into a school for children who'll enjoy the many advantages the Village has to offer... perhaps a plunge into the Olympic pool on the way home.

The successful conversion of the Village indicates the Soviet Union's determination to get value of money from this massive investment.
