    Police and troops are continuing to patrol the Rhodesian city of Umtali, where on Thursday(20 Jan) eight people were killed on bitter street fighting.

    The rioting developed from a demonstration by africans against the proposed terms of settlement between Rhodesia and Britain, and was the bloodiest outburst since the Pearce Commission arrived in the country. During the fighting there was widespread property damage - and roads were blocked by makeshift barricades consisting of dustbins and logs.

    On Friday, Rhodesia's Prime Minister, Mr Ian Smith appeared on television and gave this interpretation of the disturbances:
