  • Description

MEMBERS OF INDIA'S RIGHT-WING JAN SANGH PARTY, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) STAGED A DEMONSTRATION IN NEW DELHI, PROTESTING AGAINST THE AGREEMENT WHICH DIVIDES THE RANN OF KUTCH BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS HELD OUTSIDE HYDERABAD HOUSE, WHERE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE TWO COUNTRIES WERE DISCUSSING IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AGREEMENT.

AN INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL ANNOUNCED, IN GENEVA LAST MONTH; THAT 300 SQUARE MILES (788 SQUARE KMS) OF THE RANN OF KUTCH SHOULD GO TO PAKISTAN AND THE REMAINDER TO INDIA. IN 1965, THE TWO COUNTRIES WENT TO WAR OVER THE RANN, 8,400 SQUARE MILES (22,400 SQUARE KMS) OF MUD AND SALT MARSHES WHICH DIVIDE WEST PAKISTAN FROM THE KUTCH DISTRICT OF INDIA'S GUJARAT STATE. LARGE AMOUNTS OF OIL ARE REPORTED TO EXIST IN THE AREA.

AS THE DEMONSTRATORS PROTESTED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING, POLICE MOVED IN AND ARRESTED 38 PEOPLE, INCLUDING FOUR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT. THE JAN SANGH PARTY SAYS THAT INDIA SHOULD TOTALLY REJECT THE KUTCH AGREEMENT.

WHILE THE POLICE HERDED DEMONSTRATORS INTO VANS, MEMBERS OF THE DELEGATION INSIDE THE BUILDING BEGAN THEIR TALKS IN WHAT WAS DESCRIBED AS AN "ATMOSPHERE OF CORDIALITY". THE INDIAN DELEGATION, CONSISTING OF NINE MEMBERS, WAS LED BY MR. B.N. LOKUR, SPECIAL SECRETARY IN THE MINISTRY OF LAW. THE PAKISTANI DELEGATION WAS LED BY MR. ALLAUDDIN, THE DIRECTOR OF FIELD SURVEYS. THE TALKS ARE DUE TO LAST THREE DAYS.
