  • Description

THE MULTI-RACIAL CREW OF THE UNITED STATES SATELLITE TRACKING SHIP SWORDKNOT TOOK SHORE LEAVE IN MOMBASA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) - THE FIRST THEY'D HAD IN 48 DAYS. THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT BANNED THE SHIP FROM ENTERING DURBAN, IN SOUTH AFRICA, FOLLOWING THE CONTROVERSY OVER THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT.

THE CIVILIAN CREW OF 58, INCLUDING 11 NEGROES, HAD EXPECTED SHORE LEAVE IN DURBAN, BUT THE SHIP SAILED ON AFTER STOPPING 18 MILES (27 KM) FROM THE PORT FOR EIGHT DAYS. THE CAPTAIN HAD BEEN WAITING FOR PERMISSION TO DOCK TO COME FROM WASHINGTON, BUT WHEN THE ORDER CAME IT WAS TO DIVERT TO MOMBASA.

THE SWORDKNOT WAS DIVERTED LESS THAN TWO WEEK AFTER THE CONTROVERSY OVER THE CANCELLATION OF LEAVE FOR THE CREW OF THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVIEL. CREW MEMBERS OF THE SWORDKNOT HAVE SENT A TELEGRAM TO THE MAYOR OF DURBAN EXPRESSING THEIR EXTREME DISPLEASURE AT THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT'S ACTION, AND THANKING THE PEOPLE OF DURBAN FOR THEIR HOSPITALITY AND FRIENDLINESS DURING A PREVIIOUS VISIT.
