    AGREEMENT WAS REACHED AT THE END OF THREE DAYS OF TALKS ON ECONOMIC COOPERATION BETWEEN CHAD AND NIGERIA ON WEDNESDAY (MAY 21ST). THEY OPENED ON MONDAY (MAY 19TH) IN FRONT LAMY, AND WERE ATTENDED BY STRONG DELEGATIONS FROM BOTH COUNTRIES.

    THE NEGOTIATIONS WERE OPENED OFFICIALLY BY CHAD'S MINISTER OF FINANCE, ECONOMY AND TRANSPORT, MR ABDOULAYE LAMANA IN THE CABINET ROOM IN THE GOVERNMENT PALACE. THE NIGERIAN DELEGATION ARRIVED ON SUNDAY FROM LAGOS, AND BEFORE THE TALKS STARTED THERE WAS A MEETING BETWEEN MR DAMCIDA AND MR LAMANA AT WHICH THE AGENDA FOR THE TALKS WAS DISCUSSED.

    IN HIS OPENING SPEECH MR LAMANA SAID THAT THE NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES WHICH STARTED FOUR YEARS AGO HAD NOW REACHED A STAGE WHERE AGREEMENT COULD BE REACHED. THE TALKS WERE CONCERNED WITH THREE BROAD AREAS OF NEGOTIATION: TRADE, ROAD TRANSPORT AND AIR TRANSPORT.

    AT THE END OF THE THREE DAY TALKS AGREEMENT HAD BEEN REACHED, BUT THERE WILL BE ANOTHER MEETING AT MINISTERIAL LEVEL TO FINALISE THE AGREEMENTS ON BOTH TRADE AND COMMUNICATIONS.

    MR DAMCIDA, THE HEAD OF THE NIGERIAN DELEGATION, IS PERMANENT SECRETARY AT THE MINISTRY OF TRADE. THE CHAD DELEGATION WAS HEADED BY MR MEAR, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF ECONOMY AND TRANSPORT.
