  • Description

SAIGON IS SLOWLY RETURNING TO A NORMAL ROUTINE AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF ANARCHY AND VIOLENCE IN HIGH AT LEAST 10 PERSONS WERE KILLED AND MORE THAN 100 HURT.

THE TROUBLE WAS STARTED BY GROUPS OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ROAMED THROUGH THE STREETS AFTER PRIME MINISTER KHANH QUIT AS PRESIDENT.

AT FIRST IT APPEARED TO BE A HOLY WAR BETWEEN GANGS RE-PRESENTING VIETNAM' BUDDHIST MAJORITY AND THE CATHOLIC MINORITY. AFTER THE RIOT, SPOKESMEN FOR BOTH FAITHS SAID THEY OPPOSED VIOLENCE.

THE BUDDHIST MOB SNATCHED A PRISONER FROM A BARRICADED STREET HELD BY SOME CATHOLIC YOUTHS AND BEAT THE BOY TO DEATH. LATER, SEVERAL HUNDRED BUDDHISTS MARCHED TO THE EDITORIAL OFFICE OF SAIGON'S LARGEST CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER. THEY, WERE UNABLE TO BREAK THROUGH THE IRON-GRILLED BARRIER AND INSTEAD THEY ATTACKED A CATHOLIC ADJOINING BOOKSHOP. THEN A GANG OF BUDDHISTS ATTACKED A CATHOLIC SECTION OF THE CITY. RIOTING CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND (29-30 AUGUST) UNTIL SOUTH VIETNAM'S NEW RULING JUNTA IMPOSED MARTIAL LAW, A STRICT CURFEW AND CLOSED ALL SCHOOLS IN SAIGON UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
