  • Description

AT THE BELGIAN EMBASSY IN DAKAR, AN EXHIBITION OF WORK BY THE BELGIAN SCULPTOR GILBERT HONORE, AN ARTIST WHOSE WORK SPANS THE GULF BETWEEN EUROPE AND TROPICAL AFRICA BY DEPICTING THE FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN STRUGGLE COMMON TO BOTH.

GILBERT HONORE IS SEEN WITH HIS SCULPTURE "FETISH", WHICH PRESIDENT SENGHOR OF SENEGAL HAS DECLARED TO BE HIS FAVOURITE. THE PRESIDENT HAS WRITTEN HIS OWN PREFACE TO THE EXHIBITION CATALOGUE. SEVERAL OF HONORE'S PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS ARE ON DISPLAY, BUT IT IS THE THIN, ANGULAR, ROUGH-HEWN SCULPTURES WHICH CATCH THE EYE.

IN THE WORDS OF PRESIDENT SENGHOR, THIS ARTIST HAS GONE RIGHT BACK TO HIS NATIVE BELGIAN AND CELTIC ROOT, AND AT THE SAME TIME ABSORBED THE SPIRIT OF AFRICA. DEEP IN THE SOULS OF BOTH PEOPLE HE HAS FOUND THE SAME RESTLESS PASSION, A GREAT POWER OF EMOTION, AND EXPRESSED IT IN ITS MOST BASIC FORM.

WHETHER THE SUBJECTS ARE AFRICAN OR EUROPEAN, THE FIGURES SHARE THE SAME FEELING. THEY ARE HUMAN BEINGS IN THE BASIC STRUGGLES OF EXISTENCE, HUNGER, THIRST, LABOUR, FERTILITY, THE DRAMA OF LIFE IN ALL AGES AND PLACES.

BECAUSE THEY ARE SIMPLIFIED, THEY ARE ALSO STYLISED. THEIR GESTURES ARE LARGER THAN LIFE. THE FIGURES REACH OUT WITH ELONGATED ARMS, WHILE THEIR HUGE FEET STAY FIRMLY PLANTED ON MOTHER EARTH.

IN MATERIAL AS WELL AS STYLE, HONORE TURNS HIS BACK ON CLASSIC EUROPEAN ART. NOT FOR HIM THE TRADITIONAL GLOWING BRONZE. HE USES A SECRET ALLOY WHICH IS MAINLY TIN, GREY-WHITE LIKE A STORMCLOUD. AND THE SURFACE IS NOT SMOOTH AND POLISHED, BUT COARSE AND PITTED, AS THOUGH CARVED WITH THE ROUGH TOOLS OF A PEASANT.

DRAWING ON AN EXPERIENCE WHICH RANGES FROM THE BELGIAN COALFIELDS TO TROPICAL AFRICA, GILBERT HONORE HAS ACHIEVED AN ART WHICH EXPRESSES TO THE FULL THE ANGUISH AND ASPIRATIONS OF MODERN MAN.
